End the day with some poetry for every kind of child and every kind of bedtime. THE DREAM TRAIN is a collection of 30 poems ranging from the cosy to the funny, and from the musical to the magical. Each captures something about night-time, sleep or dreams. Written for children aged 3-8 and accompanied by the colourful and inviting artwork of Anuska Allepuz, THE DREAM TRAIN has been described as “a keep-forever hug of a book”.

It's like eating a delicious meal at your favourite restaurant, we always feel so full and happy afterwards. I came across this. My first ever author photo!Thirty years ago. 1993.I'm standing in the doorway of the flat I lived in at Tarling House, Shadwell, east London. It doesn't exist any more.A local photographer called Clifford Gabb, did a series of portraits of poets in our neighbourhood.They would have included Sally Flood, Gladys McGee, David Amery and others.We were all members of #TheBasementWriters. It was a writers' group that met every Tuesday evening in the basement of the old town hall on Cable Street - a stone's throw from where this photo was taken.I went through all sorts of formal study of literature including an English degree at Cambridge University. But it was at The Basement Writers that I learnt the most about how to write.Showing up there meant I wanted something new to read out each week. It gave me the motivation to write regularly.Listening to others reading freshly written poems and stories taught me about voice, technique, and drafting. (It's not always good at first. In fact it rarely is!)The experience of reading my own writing aloud sharpened my instincts about what works and what doesn't.The feedback I got from the other writers - a diverse gang - was invaluable.And being a part of the group meant I stood up and read out my poetry dozens and dozens of times at performance poetry nights and readings in pubs, parks, libraries, festivals etc. That's key to everything I've written since.I'm thankful to my younger self for showing up at the writers' group Tuesday night after Tuesday night, and writing all the poor stuff and good stuff that a young poet does.I'm thankful to everyone who was around back then, and for every single moment of life-experience that being a part of The Basement Writers left me with.#poetry #startingout #fortheloveofwriting

REPOSTED FROM @natalie_wilkinson_writes ... I loved children’s books long before becoming a parent. In my former primary school teacher life, nothing made me happier than browsing the shelves in bookshops and sharing my latest finds with my class. Anyone who has worked with me as a teaching assistant (thank GOODNESS for TA’s, and particularly for these two angels @elliewilliams86 and @jaynerobbens) will attest to the fact that reading books in class often became a full on stage show. Accents. Songs. Dance moves. Everyone got involved. The JOY it brings me, that Charlie now chooses books and asks me to read to him. He has such a daft sense of humour, which is no surprise given his lineage, and laughs in the same places as me. This evening we read “Hoot Owl” by Sean Taylor and Jean Jullien. It is one of my most favourite books, it always makes me cry with laughter. It is so very silly and simply brilliant. What an absolute joy picture books are, a place where the world is still ok. A photograph I especially love. Two children in creative concentration - writing poems during a workshop I ran at Christ Church Primary, Brick Lane, London, in the early 1990's. And I especially love one of the poems written, too: It makes me sing when I see other stars because they are my friends. I like to sing when I see the planet mars because I like the colour. I would sing when I touch the world because it feels smooth. I sing when it is night because for me it is daylight. I like to sing when I see the moon because I like the moon’s song tune.
